It will be hot again today but not off the charts, and the day begins with a lot of cloud cover. Iced coffee on the patio just before sunrise was very enjoyable. Light winds were cooling, and the ground is still sodden. I wonder where this enthusiasm for soccer came from. I think the sport was promoted here as an avenue for the usual actors to make money. Americans used to regard soccer as boring. Guess what-- it's still boring. So I guess most people can be persuaded to enjoy a boring spectacle, or think they enjoy a boring spectacle. Other people do and we all must do what other people do, don't we. Fall in. Conform. Well, I don't do that. I'd like to say that I've never done that, but when I was a lot younger I was more easily influenced. So I have zero interest in the World Cup. Zero. And I have zero interest in most popular enthusiasms because I find them to be quite stupid. War is the foulest of all popular enthusiasms.
All too often, those who serve their countries, end up serving the devil. Sad but true. Nations are never great. Nations are a monument to human imperfection. Nations, in order to survive, must be evil, to one degree or another. It is not easy, and it requires vigilance, as a citizen of any country, to minimize one's own complicity. Every citizen, of every country, gets sucked into the pit, but we should fight to avoid the lowest and foulest depths. Try to maintain at least some vestige of personal integrity. Don't serve the myriad gods of this world.
