Acuff And The Famous Steakhouse

I see no need to ever make this drive again, unless I actually decide to EAT at the steakhouse. And it does seem to be spruced up and a viable business. I am just not sure when they are open. Someday. Someday. But never again will I photograph anything there. This was another nostalgia trip. Getting there can be a pleasant drive in the right weather, and this last Sunday the weather was ideal. So I did it solo, with very mixed feelings, but it was all part of my project to retrace our old wanderings. Later that day I became very depressed. Oh well.

For a long time we were not even sure whether they still served meals here, but judging by the new sign and the neat interior I viewed through this window, I think they are in business. I'm just not sure when they are actually open. In the evening? In the afternoon? Only on certain days of the week? I really would like to eat here again-- my wife and I ate here, once, and it was kind of a neat experience. But that was even before we were married. At that time it was kind of an all-you-can-eat buffet.

This is even a new sign, and it says "OPEN" and when the neon is lit, this place surely MUST be open. But when is it lit??

Apart from the world famous Acuff Steakhouse, there is not a whole lot in Acuff. There were some guys down the road working on trucks. There's a cotton gin. There's an old house that has been there for a long time (I photographed it years ago when my wife was with me) and now it looks like somebody is trying to fix it up. Apart from that, not much. I'll finish this next time, with a detour to Roosevelt. That detour was yet another nostalgia trip.

Finishing Sights Around Downtown Lubbock

Rarely do I do anything scenic in any conventional sense. I am rarely interested in anything conventional.
This pic recaps something I did with my wife, when we visited this location a few years ago. Different camera, somewhat different point of view.

I'll bet not many people living here have seen any of this, or paid attention to any of this. I try to pay attention to things that no one else will. I try to document what no one else would try to document, focus on things that no one else would bother to look twice at.

It will be some time before I do more because the weather here has been lousy. Everything is water-logged, and there is no sun. Cool and even cold, and cloudy and wet every day and Thursday, tomorrow, might well be flooded out.

Continuing That Alley downtown

This is only one of many alleys we explored in downtown Lubbock. It smelled pretty bad back there. I don't recall it smelling like that the first time we checked it.

Pretty funky, especially around this rather shaky loading dock.

It's all pretty old stuff back here.

Look at all the corrosion and corruption on these gas meters!

A hard push and the walls might fall down.

Did I mention that a set of railroad tracks run through this alley?

Maybe I should come back during the work week to see what kind of activity there might be. But next time we see what I found by moving a few blocks away.

Another Alley In Downtown Lubbock

We investigated this area in the early days of our relationship. I was pleased to return with a better camera and probe more closely.

There's a lot of funky stuff here.

There's a loading dock here, and it stank.

This was interesting-- note the old fire engine. It has been restored.
I think something died back under this rather shaky structure. More next time.
