Defer Spur

Stuff happened, so we did not make it to Spur. But my wife decided to take her car and check out some things in Abernathy, just north of Lubbock. At one time her family lived in a converted gas station near a Methodist Church, and she wanted to see if the building is still there, and the church, and a school she remembered. Yes, those things are still there, and the trip gave me a chance to be a passenger and just kick back and take pictures on the road. It was a nice drive, and a hint of rain was in the air. Unfortunately, it did not rain much and our deep drought goes on, to a beat of its own. This pic series features Highway 27, not a bit like Highway 61, and sights on the road in Lubbock, between Lubbock and Abernathy, and in Abernathy.

Big skies!

Lubbock is ready to repel those darned, pesky, UN invaders!

My wife has fond memories of this school. It is a good school. More pics tomorrow.

Time To Finish Brownfield

I need to finish this because today we might get another photo series, in Spur. Spur is truly turning into a ghost town, according to our sources. And that's sad. It was a nice little town. I have not been there in years. But even then, it was more than a little dead...

And more...

And this completes Brownfield.

Continuing Brownfield

And while I'm on the topic of Brownfield, let me switch briefly to Idalou. My wife and I went to an estate sale in Idalou this weekend. That is another small town I like. I could be happy there. Terrific neighborhoods, zoned and maintained in a rational manner, friendly folks. I found an old Dorset watch, in a diver's style, with rotating bezel, wind-up, Speidel USA band, Swiss movement, shock resistant and water resistant to 50 meters, for 50 cents! It works perfectly, keeping accurate time. The crystal has a few scratches but maybe a jeweler can polish them out. I have a collection of watches and this is a nice addition. But here are more pics from Brownfield:

Brownfield Again

More from Brownfield. This interesting and attractive city is smack dab in the middle of a major grape producing region in Texas. They are currently having a wine festival in Brownfield. No wonder the city seemed saner and more civilized than others we have visited lately. It's interesting that some of the same gun nuts in this area who will tell you that "guns aren't the problem because PEOPLE kill people" will turn right around and lecture you on the evils of alcohol, as though alcohol caused alcoholism. PEOPLE, some of them, abuse alcohol. And some people have addictive personalities, and some people are very vulnerable to the effects of various intoxicants.
I happen to enjoy a glass of wine, and even the occasional beer. So don't give me the temperance lecture.
