Yes, we have arrived at the dump. If memory serves, and it rarely serves very well these days, this was once a private sector recycling center. It was a disaster. It seems now to be in some sort of legal limbo. This ground is in need of clean-up. It doesn't look very bad until you get close. And we are going to get close. Meanwhile, upon superficial examination...
It looks a lot like any other ruin or relic in Lubbock County.
When we did our investigations, in early July of 2015, access was unrestricted and there were no warning notices of any kind.
And it looks like we saved the best for last.
Next, we will examine that dump (literal DUMP) just off I-27 on the other side of Lubbock International (that's a laugh) Airport. Also known as Preston Smith airport. I guess because Preston Smith owned some of the early skin flick theaters in this area? Surely not because he was a mediocre governor. As far as I can tell, old Preston Smith was pretty much of a dud, except for his pioneering work in adult entertainment. He seems to have been an utter failure as a bank president-- maybe too many sweetheart loans to his buds in the Oil Bidness. His bank got into trouble and Preston Smith got a slap on the wrist. He was a good old boy, though. He had connections. There were probably people who owed him. Who knows? In my humble opinion, Preston Smith was a piece of crap, but now he has an airport named after him! Not much of an airport, but still. Even so. Go figure. He's dead now, so it probably doesn't matter...
There's a lot to photograph when you really zoom in on things...
A body of water!
Another SKYCHUTE!
There is more to come.
There's so much to do in Abernathy! So much to see!
It's all a matter of perspective, and of proportion.
It's a SKYCHUTE! And in Abernathy they have more than one. Wow. Just wow.
Never before have I seen a drain pipe quite like this. More wow.
And that's a GOOD thing! Abernathy! Run away, Antelopes! Run away!
